Keywords: Education Government Local government Non-manufacturing industry Policy / Systems

Japan's Ministry of the Environment (MOE) announced on July 27, 2004 that Kami-isshiki Minami Elementary School (Edogawa Ward, Tokyo) had been chosen for a feasibility study in fiscal 2004 for a project entitled Eco-Renovation of School Buildings and Environmental Education. A similar study, on a smaller scale, will also be conducted at Takiai Elementary School in Hino City (in the western suburbs of Tokyo).

Using actual cases, the ministry plans to estimate the costs and environmental effects of implementing various environmental measures for school buildings, and to establish the basic concepts of eco-renovation, while taking into account construction and the ways that schools are used. The ministry also plans to discuss how to advance eco-education for students and local communities.

Through this project the government is implementing the winning idea from a public call for policy proposals in fiscal 2003. The ministry is considering opening a website to provide information and updates on progress with this study. It plans to commission the study to Organic Table Co., the proponent of this project, and other related organizations, in order to make use of their expertise.
