The Urban Green Space Development Foundation of Japan, which works to raise public awareness about urban greening and supports greening activities, announced on May 12, 2004 that it would test its greening assessment system prior to full implementation in or after April 2005.

This system embodies a third party assessment of conservation and greening activities by private corporations and corporate groups that will evaluate their efforts and achievements in planting trees and other "greening" activities, and to authenticate outstanding performance. The Foundation's intent is to use this system to promote greening and green conservation by certifying companies that have excellent records in green area management.

The Foundation invited company applicants during May 2004 and will now start its trial assessment. The process of assessing greening activities will involve on-site inspections and interviews with applicant companies during July to December 2004. The Foundation plans to advise the companies based on the results of its assessments from January to February 2005. After this assessment process trial, the Foundation plans to launch full scale operation of its green assessment system after April 2005.
