Nation-Wide Network Built at the Third Symposium for Food Banks

Second Harvest Japan (2HJ), a Japanese non-profit organization, held the third symposium for food banks on October 14, 2010, in Tokyo. 2HJ collects edible food products that are discarded by food manufacturers, farmers and individuals for various reasons, and provides the food to welfare facilities and the needy.

2HJ is the first Japanese food bank and was established in 2000. It aims to reduce food waste and to create a supply system with social welfare by building up new food distribution. In 2009, it received food from about 500 companies and delivered some 1.3 million meals to 200 thousand people.

In the third symposium, 2HJ and 10 other food banks in Japan concluded the unified guidelines for food bank activities, which 2HJ has been investigating since the previous symposium held in 2009, and set up a nation-wide food bank network. The network aims to earn trust from companies and society with regard to their activities. 2HJ plans to raise awareness and expand recognition of the food bank through the network, dealing with further development of activities.
