Fujifilm Introduces 'Biodiversity Conservation' into Eco-friendly Design

Fujifilm Corp., Japan's leading photographic company, announced on February 16, 2010, that it will incorporate "biodiversity conservation" in its environmentally-friendly design policy. The policy aims to reduce environmental impact throughout the total life cycle of its products and services.

The design policy previously had four main objectives; (1) countermeasures against global warming and reduction of environmental impact; (2) efficient use of resources; (3) safety and compliance; and (4) information disclosure. The company newly added biodiversity conservation to the above objectives, making the evaluation criteria even more detailed.

The company says it will work to provide more environmentally-friendly products and services in a sustainable manner by making evaluations of two key points: (1) initiatives to avoid or minimize impact on the ecosystem in order to protect the natural environment and maintain biodiversity; and (2) risk management related to sustainable supply of biological resources from a long-term perspective.

By incorporating biodiversity conservation objectives into manufacturing processes, employees will have a more profound awareness about what biodiversity means and how important the resources provided by the ecosystem are. By introducing this system, the company aims to contribute to biodiversity conservation through the work that employees do through the life cycle of products and services.
