Solar Panel and Power Storage System to Light Up Condominium

Itochu Corp., a major Japanese trading company, and Itochu Property Development Ltd. announced on December 16, 2009, that their new condominium will be equipped with solar panels and a fixed power storage system to supply almost all the electricity required to power the light-emitting diode (LED) lighting fixtures in its common area.

The new five-storey condominium, called Crevia Futakotamagawa, is located in Tokyo's Setagaya Ward. All 51 units go on sale March 2010, and residents are scheduled to start moving in from March 2011. It will be the first condominium with a built-in solar power generation and storage system, which will store electricity generated during the daytime and supply power at night. By installing energy-conserving LED lighting fixtures, annual power consumption for lighting the common area will be reduced from approximately 36,900 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to 10,000 kWh, almost all of which can be covered by the clean energy.

Using the system will result in approximately 20.5 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) fewer emissions per year. The residents will also benefit from the lower lighting costs by lowering their management fees by about 1,200 yen (about U.S.$13) per unit.
