JFS Meets the Press Briefing Session Series No. 2

Climate Action by Practitioners from Government, Industry, Academia, and Citizens before the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit

June 9, 2008

The discussion on climate-change related action is heating up around the world. Followed by the latest round of UN-sponsored global climate change talks in Bonn, discussions will continue at the approaching G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit in July 2008. Here Japan will have an opportunity to share with the world its latest initiatives and ideas and help boost global awareness of the urgency of the problem and potential solutions.

On June 9, 2008, Japan for Sustainability (JFS) held its second briefing session for foreign correspondents, freelance journalists, and embassy officials in order to present the latest climate change action and initiatives by government, industry, academia and citizens. This session welcomed distinguished guest speakers from the Ministry of the Environment and a non-governmental organization, WWF Japan, who introduced their latest initiatives and ideas on climate-change related action.
* Please check the video clips of all the presentations below.

A lively discussion involving both speakers and audience during the question-and-answer session addressed the greenhouse gas emission reduction measures proposed by Japan in the lead-up to the G8 Summit in July.

Feedback from Participants

I enjoyed the briefing session. Presentations were focused and easy to follow. There was enough time to raise questions and get the debreafers' points of view. Good idea to have the opportunity to have a talk with them.
My opinion is that we have reached a 'critical point' regarding climate change. The message has to be a sound one. People in the street are a bit confused. They perceive the threat -in a varying degree- but still lack general information about how serious this may be. People react to images and -unfortunately- when they are likely to suffer the consequences of a problem. I would focus on these 2 aspects: clear messages and practical examples of problems we will likely suffer or are already suffering.
