[From the Editors]
On behalf of our entire volunteer and staff team, we would like to
express our heartfelt gratitude for all the kind messages received from
readers on the occasion of our fifth anniversary.
We would like to share with you some of the messages from around the
world. They are truly a source of inspiration and encouragement, not
only for JFS but also for all who are working hard for sustainability.
Dear JFS colleagues and friends,
Congratulations on your fifth anniversary!
While I have been associated with many NGOs over the years, not one has
established a global presence in such a short period of time as has JFS. The
key to such success must be two-fold. First it is the result of the many
people who have given their time, energy, and resources so generously and
passionately to JFS. Such an organizational model enables motivated
individuals to make meaningful contributions.
Second, JFS clearly is providing an extremely useful service, which has
garnered the interest of people throughout the world.
I am pleased to be associated with such a quality organization. Again,
congratulations, and I look forward to what the next five years will bring.
Lester Brown
President, Earth Policy Institute
Director, Japan for Sustainability
I have enjoyed many professional visits to Japan since my first trip
there over thirty years ago. And it has been my pleasure during that
time to meet, talk to, and even collaborate with many, many dozens of
Japanese scientists, managers, and NGO leaders.
In all those years I have never found a group so responsive and capable
as Japan for Sustainability. It has been pleasant and rewarding to work
with them.
I know that Japan is far ahead in implementing practical policies for a
more sustainable society. I am proud that I have connections with JFS,
which is an excellent bridge into the advanced thinkers of Japan.

Japan for Sustainability has become one of the best windows Japan has to
the outside world. Its regularity, brevity and consistency are the
hallmark of first class journalism!

I send you both congratulations as well as admiration on the occasion of
your 5th "birthday"! My daughter is also five, and of course I also
think she is wonderful ... but we all know that five-year-old children
are still very young indeed.
Isn't it amazing, then, what a group of people can do in the same amount
of time? JFS, at five, has long been a mature, highly effective NGO.
In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that JFS has already changed not
just Japan, but the world. How many projects, articles, and motivated
people exist now in this world, that would not exist without you and
your work! You are true "multipliers," and a role model for change
agents everywhere.
I look forward to many more years of international partnership.
