Asahi Glass Co. (AGC), Japan's leading glass manufacturer, released in October 2012, an eco-glass window product named Attoch that is ideal for energy-saving window renovations in office buildings and stores.

Amid tight electricity supply conditions triggered by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the need for an easy way to convert single-pane windows to energy-saving windows has been rapidly increasing in Japan. Most office buildings and stores, where most windows are normally fixed, take the method of applying heat shield films directly on the window glass. While heat shield films are generally effective against summer heat, they are not effective in keeping cold air out during the winter.

The newly developed Attoch glass is a low-emissivity (low-E) glass that is installed to existing windows from the inside, making them energy-efficient throughout the year. Low-E is an environmentally friendly glass that has a special metal film coating on one side to decrease the transfer of heat, and is typically used in double-pane windows to enhance their energy-saving performance. When installed, Attoch is estimated to reduce air-conditioning energy use by about 30 percent, which translates into an annual cost reduction of about 610,000 yen (about U.S.$7,700).

The product requires no outdoor scaffolding, resulting in a low installation cost and an installation time of less than one hour per window. Moreover, there is no need to dispose of glass as it works on existing windows.
