Yokohama Smart City Project Forum for Fiscal 2012 Held

Keywords: Local government Renewable Energy

The city of Yokohama held the Yokohama Smart City Project (YSCP) Forum for fiscal 2012 on July 24, 2012 to introduce its projects. The YSCP was selected as one of the Next-Generation Energy and Social System Demonstration Areas by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in April 2010 to build original Japanese smart grid systems and to promote them worldwide. Together with private firms, the project has introduced renewable and unused energies, energy management systems for households, local firms and communities, and next-generation transportation systems.

Taking advantage of the Yokohama Green Power (YGP) model operation system for energy saving, the project demonstrated Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS), which visualizes energy consumption in each room of the home and power generation by each device. It also provides a virtual pricing list for promotion of energy savings.

The project also promotes widespread car sharing of electric vehicles (EV), leading to the introduction of an EV sharing system operated, for the first time in Japan, in cooperation with local shops.
