Saraya Co., a Japanese manufacturer of detergents and hygiene products, announced on June 29, 2012, that the palm oil and palm kernel oil, including their derivatives, that it uses for in-house production are now all certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

RSPO-certified palm oil can be purchased through three systems: (1) the Segregation System, in which a user purchases certified palm oil that is kept separate from non-certified palm oil throughout the supply chain; (2) the Mass Balance System, in which a user purchases certified palm oil that is mixed with non-certified palm oil at a designated ratio; or (3) the Book-and-Claim System, in which a user purchases certificates for the volume it claims to use for its production, instead of purchasing actual certified palm oil or palm kernel oil. As its purchase of credits is regarded as a purchase of RSPO-certified palm oil or palm kernel oil, the user can mark their products with GreenPalm certification labels.

Saraya has used the Segregation System to purchase raw materials for its proprietary biosurfactant, Sophorolipid, as well as for some products containing the substance, while having used the Book-and-Claim System for its Yashinomi brand detergents. In addition to these, it bought GreenPalm credits for the same volume of conventional palm oil and palm kernel oil it purchased as raw materials in and after April 2012. Saraya confirms that, with the additional credit purchase, all the palm oil and palm kernel oil used for its in-house production from April onward is RSPO-certified.

The company's goal is to increase the number of products that use palm oil certified under the Segregation System.
