Fuji Electric Launches Industry's First Coin-Operated Payment Machine for Electric Vehicle Quick Chargers

Fuji Electric Co. of Japan started selling the industry's first coin-operated payment machine to accompany electric vehicle (EV) quick chargers on April 25, 2012. The machine makes it more convenient for EV users to use quick-charging services.

The coin-operated payment equipment was developed with the application of vending machine technology from the company's subsidiary, Fuji Electric Retail Systems Co. It maintains a security level as high as that of regular vending machines. Any EV users can use the machine twenty-four hours a day and do not need to be registered. The owner of a charging station can keep costs down because of the unmanned operation.

The machine is 30 centimeters (cm) wide, 40 cm deep and 121 cm high, and weighs 41 kilograms. It can be installed as an option for all models of EV quick chargers manufactured by Fuji Electric Co., and can also be installed as an add-on to existing chargers. The payment machine costs 600,000 yen (about U.S.$7,317) excluding tax.
