Japanese Egg Producer Receives Ecofeed Certificate

The Japan Livestock Industry Association announced on February 10, 2012, that it awarded unshelled eggs produced by Hokuryo, a Japanese egg production and sales company, an Ecofeed Livestock Product Certificate. This is the first such certificate given to eggs in Japan.

The association launched the certificate system in May 2011 to promote the use of ecofeed (feed containing 20% or more of food waste including soybean residue, rapeseed residue, bread crumbs, and confectionery waste) and to contribute to a resource recycling-based society. Livestock products obtained from livestock animals raised on ecofeed and their processed products must meet certain criteria to be certified as Ecofeed Livestock Products. Hokuryu's eggs are the fifth product to receive the certificate.

Hokuryo, located in Hokkaido, Japan, raises 2.5 million egg laying hens, cooperates with Japanese retailers Aeon Hokkaido, Max Valu Hokkaido and Aeon Topvalu to market eggs produced from hens raised on ecofeed using local untapped resources including soybean residue, rapeseed residue and bran. By also adding rice and wheat harvested in Hokkaido, Hokuryo hopes to boost the food self-sufficiency rate.
