Electricity Storage Products Expected to Form Largest Component of Japan's Smart Community Market in 2020

According to a report entitled "Reality and Future Prospect of Smart Community Related Technologies and Market 2011," released on September 14, 2011, by Fuji Keizai Co., a Japanese marketing research firm, electricity storage products will become the largest component of Japan's smart community market, at 1.2023 trillion yen (about U.S. $15.61 billion), by around 2020, while next-generation transportation products will see the sharpest growth, growing by a factor of 47.6 from 2010.

Smart communities are communities that manage energy, including electricity, heat, and unused energy, in an integrated manner at the local level and expedite the transformation of transportation systems and resident lifestyles from a comprehensive approach.

The electricity storage component of this market is estimated to be 2.8 times greater in 2020 than in 2010. Lithium-ion batteries, which will be increasingly used in electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), are likely to account for 80% of this category. With the growth of EVs and PHEVs, the next-generation transportation market in 2020 is projected to be 599.5 billion yen (about U.S. $7.79 billion).
