Keywords: Environmental Technology Non-manufacturing industry Renewable Energy

On March 25, 2011, Electric Power Development Co. (J Power) announced that, in cooperation with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), it will conduct a verification study of an offshore wind farm system off Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture to establish offshore wind power generation system technology.

The research will be conducted about 1.3km off the coast of Kitakyushu City and 14.5m deep, where J Power and NEDO have already built an offshore wind observation tower to investigate wind and wave conditions. The group will install an offshore wind turbine equipped with a rotor 83 meters in diameter. Using the observed weather and sea condition data from the study, they will develop and verify the design, installation, operation and maintenance of the offshore wind farm and investigate the effects on the environment.

The study will continue from August 2011 to February 2015. J Power will proceed with preparations such as required approvals and permits and inter-grid connections. J Power has been actively promoting reusable energy utilization and the company plans to continue research to commercialize offshore wind farming.
