NEC Corp., a leading Japanese electronics company, announced on June 20, 2011, that it would gradually introduce a Biglobe Ecobird Home system in 10,000 households of group company employees from July 2011 through March 2013. The company aims to support its employees' efforts use less power at peak consumption times in summer and to also save energy year-round.

The NEC group sells a Biglobe Ecobird, a cloud-type service to support the energy saving efforts of companies by allowing them to visualize on the web the consumption of electricity, water, and city gas at their stores and offices. The group will launch its home version, the Biglobe Ecobird Home, in late August 2011, targeting companies and municipalities that plan to support households with their energy saving efforts.

A sensor for wireless communication is installed on the power distribution board of each home. It transmits hourly power consumption data to a server via a broadband router. System users can check their own power consumption on the web, charted on a graph, and the power saving rate of the previous day. When power consumption exceeds the previous week's peak, an alarm email is sent to the user. This visualization of power use will enhance awareness of power saving and promote effective power-saving efforts.
