Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co. (MGC), Japan, announced on October 18, 2010, that it has successfully developed a highly heat-resistant polyamide resin from plant-based raw materials and plans to begin market development for the new product. The new polyamide resin achieves high heat resistance because of its high crystalline level, which is caused by optimization of its molecular structure, while also maintaining good molding processability by keeping its melting point below 300 degrees Celsius.
With its high heatproof temperature, this new product is expected to be used as a peripheral material for LED technology, in electric and electronic components that require lead-free soldering, and as a peripheral material for automotive engines. As more than 50 percent of the product's raw materials are plant-based compounds, the resin can be categorized as a "biomass plastic" in Japan.
MGC already has a production and sales lines for MX nylon, a polyamide resin made from in-house raw materials. The company now plans to produce the newly developed highly heat-resistant polyamide resin at multiple hub factories.
