MHI to Reduce CO2 with Newly Developed Hybrid Turbocharger for Marine Vessel Engine

Keywords: Climate Change Environmental Technology Manufacturing industry

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) has developed the "MET83MAG," a generator-integrated hybrid turbocharger for marine propulsion diesel engines, according to an announcement on August 23, 2010. The MET83MAG utilizes engine exhaust gas to both drive the compressor and to generate power, allowing it to supply the power necessary for seagoing, thereby contributing to reductions in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The new turbocharger was commercialized in cooperation with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, Universal Shipbuilding Corporation and Hitachi Zosen Corporation.

The MET83MAG, with a maximum power output of 754 kilowatts at 9,500 revolutions per minute, is able to substitute the function of its auxiliary blower by using its generator as an electric motor in order to enhance turbocharger performance. The new turbocharger can also accommodate demand for replacement of existing turbochargers, as it is compact due to its built-in generator design.

MHI will install the MET83MAGi unit on large size bulk carriers that are scheduled to launch in 2011 and conduct on-board pilot testing. This is the world's first testing of this kind.

With its expertise on producing the equipment necessary for efficient use of ship energy, MHI intends to continue proposing new solution systems to improve heat efficiency and meet the requirements of stricter environmental regulations in the future.
