Tokyo Gas Engineering to Participate in Japan's First Test for Biogas Input into City Gas Pipelines

Keywords: Manufacturing industry Renewable Energy

Tokyo Gas Engineering Co. announced on May 24, 2010, that it has accepted an order for experimental facilities to test the input of biogas into city gas pipelines. The project is being conducted by Bio Energy, a Japanese company operating a methane gas fermentation power plant to recycle food waste. Tokyo Gas Engineering is a subsidiary company wholly owned by Tokyo Gas Co., the city gas supplier to the Kanto region in Japan.

The project, adopted by the Toshi-gas Shinko Center in October 2009, aims to test a system where biogas derived from food residue is input into a Tokyo Gas pipeline by using a compression unit. In this system, the biogas (methane: 60%; carbon dioxide and other gases: 40%) generated from biomass derived from food and other waste is used after it is purified, its contents and calorific value are adjusted to the same levels as those of city gas and gas odor is added to it. It is the first attempt in Japan to input food residue-derived biogas into the pipelines of city gas.

The test system is to begin operations at the end of October 2010. Tokyo Gas Engineering also plans to utilize its engineering technologies to promote the use of sewage digestion gas and biogas derived from food and other waste for city gas supply and other applications.
