Japan's Panasonic Ecology Systems Co., a subsidiary of Panasonic Corp., announced on June 22, 2010, that it had succeeded in developing a new catalyst using no platinum to reduce particulate matter (PM) in diesel engine exhaust gas, and began shipping its samples.

PM contained in the exhaust gas from diesel engines is fine particles composed mainly of carbon. As the PM causes air pollution, its removal is required by regulations. While the conventional catalyst requires using platinum, a precious metal, the new catalyst consists primarily of newly developed alkali metal. A new additive was also developed to solve the durability issue associated with a catalyst using alkali metal, making this new technology possible.

The new catalyst makes it possible to secure the same level of performance as a conventional platinum-based catalyst at an approximately 20 percent lower temperature. This means less energy is required to maintain the temperature available for the catalytic reaction. The company expects that new catalyst which does not use valuable platinum will provide a low-cost and energy-saving solution for diesel exhaust gas purification to remove hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and PM.
