The Japan Federation of Freight Industries (JFFI) selected and announced the winner of the 11th Environmental Grand Prize for Distribution on May 27, 2010. The recipient of the grand prize this year was Sagawa Express Co. This recognition system strives to promote the improvement of environmental measures and policies. In addition to the grand prize, there were also physical distribution prizes awarded for activities in environmental conservation and raising awareness.

Grand prize-recipient Sagawa Express's efforts include the introduction of a large number of natural gas-powered trucks to its truck fleet, establishing natural gas fueling stations for private use. In addition, Sagawa Express promotes the idea of a modal shift, by changing their mode of transportation for shipping from a system that relies solely on trucks to one that employs more environmentally-friendly transportation methods such as rail and ship.

The nature of express parcel delivery service makes it difficult to calculate the numerical amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. By compiling data for each customer from the existing tracking system and route management system, however, Sagawa Express is now able to produce relatively concrete emissions information. JFFI awarded Sagawa Express the prize in recognition of their success in providing this type of information aiming to make distribution performance (CO2) visible.
