Fujitsu Starts Employee Participation-Based Dandelion Distribution Survey

Keywords: Ecosystems / Biodiversity Non-manufacturing industry

Fujitsu Ltd., a major electronics manufacturer in Japan, announced on May 11, 2010 that it had started a nationwide survey of dandelion distribution. The company's employees took part in the survey using the camera function of their mobile phones. It was conducted from April 1 to June 30, 2010, as a series of projects under the policy "Contribution to community-building that preserves biodiversity," part of its Stage VI Fujitsu Group Environmental Protection Program.

As part of the survey, the company's employees and their families took photos of nearby dandelions in bloom using the camera function of their GPS-equipped cell phones. The photos, along with their GPS information, were sent to a designated e-mail address to be stored in a database. The information, collected and plotted as a map, shows nationwide distribution of both native and non-native dandelion species.

The company expects the survey to test the possibility of using information and communication technologies (ICT) to contribute to biodiversity conservation, and to raise awareness of the importance of the issue among employees, thereby promoting future actions.
