TEPCO Launches Experimental Study of Offshore Wind Power Generation

The Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc. (TEPCO) announced on May 19, 2010, the start of its "Experimental Study on Offshore Wind Power Generation Systems" in June 2010, in the Pacific Ocean off the southern coast of Choshi in Chiba Prefecture. The study is a joint research project with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

In cooperation with the University of Tokyo, TEPCO prepared for the new study by building an offshore wind observation tower in the target area in August 2009, with the goal of gaining better understanding of weather, ocean, wind, and wave conditions. The study was entrusted to TEPCO and the University of Tokyo by NEDO.

The latest experimental study is the next step toward practical utilization of offshore wind power, and is an extension of the 2009 study. This time, one fixed-type offshore power generation facility running a wind turbine, equipped with a 90-meter diameter rotor, is scheduled to operate from June 2010 until March 2014. The purpose is to establish methods for the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of offshore wind power generation facilities in the more hostile seas near Japan, as well as to identify their environmental impacts.

As part of their efforts to increase renewable energy use, TEPCO intends to continue developing safe and cost-effective offshore wind power generation facilities in order to utilize favorable offshore wind conditions, which are better than those on land.
