Fuji Xerox Tokyo Cuts CO2 Emissions by Switching to Power-Assisted Bicycles
Fuji Xerox Tokyo Co., Ltd. announced on January 13, 2010, that it had replaced the motorcycles used by its customer service engineers with power-assisted bicycles and successfully reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by about 335 tons in the past four years. The engineers use the bicycles to visit their customers for maintenance of the company's digital multi-functional devices and printers.
The switch was made in accordance with the Road Traffic Law revised in June 2006, which made it illegal to park motorcycles on the road. Also, the company wanted to protect the environment, increase productivity and to promote better health.
The replacement of motorcycles with power-assisted bicycles started in April 2006 and was conducted in full scale to about 450 bicycles in September of the same year. The program was further ramped up to about 550 bicycles in January 2010. The engineers use the power-assisted bicycles when visiting their customers that are located within a two-kilometer diameter area from their offices in the central part of Tokyo's 23 wards.
As a result, about 350 motorcycles were reduced, and the monthly gasoline consumption decreased to about 1,800 liters, equivalent to one-third of the amount used in April 2006. The total amount of CO2 emissions reduced was about 335 tons as of December 31, 2009.
As power-assisted bicycles can move through urban areas more conveniently than motorcycles, the engineers can arrive at the customers' location around ten minutes faster on average than before. The company plans to continue the use of power-assisted bicycles with the dual aim of reducing CO2 emissions and offering better service to its customers.
