Eco-Driving Requires Safety Awareness and Relaxed Mind According to Survey

Sony Assurance Inc., a non-life insurance subsidiary of Sony Financial Holdings Inc., revealed on April 26, 2010, the results of a survey on eco-drivers conducted via the Internet between April 13 and 16. The respondents were 1,000 men and women aged 18 to 59, who drive a car at least once a month, always practicing eco-driving. When asked what they think is necessary for eco-driving (multiple answers allowed), 78.5 percent of the respondents answered "awareness of safe driving," 77.8 percent answered "relaxed mind," 71.9 percent answered "consciousness for the environment" and 55.8 percent answered "knowledge of eco-driving."

With regard to the motivation for eco-driving (multiple answers allowed), 63.0 percent of the respondents answered "increases in gasoline price," and 62.2 percent for "awareness of safe driving," followed by 32.6 percent answering "watching news about the environment." When asked what they think is effective in eco-driving (free answers), answers related to start-up were most common at 33.9 percent, while answers related to use of the brakes accounted for 14.2 percent, and idling-related answers were 13.9 percent.

As for the functions or devices to support eco-driving (multiple answers allowed), 54.2 percent of the respondents said they want "idling prevention systems," 50.9 percent asked for "systems that maintain stable engine rotations," 47.5 percent requested "systems that control the engine brake at its optimum level," 45.5 percent desired "systems that allow for soft acceleration by controlling the engine" and 45.4 percent wanted "tire pressure monitors."
