Five Prefectures and Tokyo Agree to Regional Renewable Energy Regional Collaboration

Five prefectural governments in northern Japan (Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Akita, and Yamagata) signed an agreement on regional collaboration concerning renewable energy with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) on March 26, 2010.

In an effort to use renewable energy that is effective in reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, this agreement aims to link urban demand with the supply of renewable energy generated in regions that are rich in natural energy resources.

Under the agreement, TMG will support the effort to boost the economy and increase employment in the supply regions by creating green energy demand in Tokyo. Each supplying prefecture - Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Akita, and Yamagata - will promote renewable energy development locally, which will potentially stimulate their local economies and increase job opportunities as well. Their efforts are also expected to contribute to establishing a low-carbon society by providing the urban Tokyo area with natural energy.

As a group, these six local governments are planning to request support from the national government and related organizations in order to facilitate smooth regional collaboration.
