Japanese Cabinet Approves National Biodiversity Strategy 2010 for COP10

The Japanese cabinet approved the "National Biodiversity Strategy 2010", on March 16, 2010 for the 10th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10) to be held in October 2010 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture.

The strategy sets the medium- to long-term objectives to improve the state of biodiversity in Japan from the current level by 2050, as well as the short-term target to halt biodiversity loss by 2020. Under these objectives, the Government of Japan proposes to improve and strengthen national measures for biodiversity with COP10 as a start, providing support for all prefectures to launch their local strategies for biodiversity by 2012.

Additionally, Japan plans to convey the "Satoyama Initiative" to the world at COP10 as one of the features, which is the system of coexistence between humans and nature utilizing traditional wisdom and heritage in Japanese rural natural areas (satoyama). Japan also expects to establish the "International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (provisional name)" at COP10 to further advance international approaches to effectively promote the Satoyama Initiative and calling for participation throughout the world.

This is Japan's fourth National Biodiversity Strategy since 1995, and is based on the Basic Act on Biodiversity enacted in 2008, which aims to strengthen the efforts toward COP10 as one of its goals.
