More Live Footage of Rare Wildlife Available on Internet

The Wild Bird Society of Japan and Meiji Dairies Co. installed a camera on January 15, 2010, to webcast live footage of a wild bird sanctuary established through an agreement by the two parties for the purpose of wild bird protection. The camera was installed on the adjacent land owned by Nemuro City, Hokkaido, through cooperation with NTT East, a Japanese regional telecommunication services provider and the city.

Thanks to the Internet, viewers can enjoy seasonal views of wild birds including red-crowned white cranes, white tailed eagles, Steller's eagles, mammals such as Yezo deer, and wetland flowers on their PCs. The live images and audio are available between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Japanese standard time) throughout the year. Viewers can remotely control the camera position and angle from right to left and up and down, and zoom in and out on their PCs.

Such an attempt to post online live footage of birds and animals in bird sanctuaries and national parks is becoming popular. Japan's Ministry of the Environment distributes live images of wildlife in 43 national parks (as of March 2010) across the nation. The images are recorded every 60 minutes during daytime hours and image data for the past five years are stored.

The Wombat TV of Satsukiyama Zoo in Ikeda City, Osaka, shows live images of wombats (Australian marsupial mammal) in their facilities around the clock, enabling viewers to see activities of these nocturnal animals.
