MOE Adopts Eight Model Carbon Offset Projects

Japan's Ministry of the Environment announced on September 11, 2009, that it has adopted eight projects from the 44 applications received for its Model Project Plan for Carbon Offsets.

All Nippon Airways' "ANA Carbon Offset Program Project" was selected for the category of carbon offset for a general market. The project takes advantage of the Japan Verified Emission Reduction (J-VER) credit scheme to offset carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions resulting from their domestic flights. Intending to publicize its initiatives, ANA will advertise the program to airport users nationwide and promote it through inflight publications and events. Six other projects were also selected for the same category.

For the category of carbon offset between specific parties, the "Carbon Zero" printer/multifunctional peripheral (MFP) project by Oki Electric Industry Co., and Satisfactory International, a recycling-related service provider, was selected. The project offsets CO2 emitted by manufacturing processes at three of Oki's factories (both domestic and overseas) using the overseas Verified Emission Reduction scheme.

Details and achievements of these adopted model projects will be shared in the Ministry's open seminars and other carbon offsetting efforts, which will offer examples of emission calculation methods, discuss project boundaries and adoption, and provide education on carbon offsetting projects.
