Increase in Eco-Friendly Convenience Stores Equipped with Cutting-edge Technology

Leading convenience store chains in Japan continue to open eco-friendly stores with cutting-edge technology. Among them, Seven Eleven's Kyoto Shusse-inarimae branch opened on January 22, 2010, and Family Mart's Toyotama-naka-san-chome branch opened in Tokyo's Nerima Ward on January 27.

Seven Eleven's Kyoto Shusse-inarimae branch is an eco-friendly store which considerably reduced the power usage for the store's lighting by utilizing solar energy, installing a skylight to use sunlight, and introducing LED lighting. The store was selected as one of the Energy Saving Lighting Design Model Projects for fiscal 2009 by the Ministry of the Environment. The annual amount of power reduction for the store is estimated to be about 30 percent from its fiscal 2008 levels.

Family Mart's Toyotama-naka-san-chome branch also introduced a solar power system. The store uses LED lights, and installed a tubular daylight system which was a first in Japan's convenience store sector. Its freezer uses no Freon gas. The store has a timber frame and panel structure with reduced environmental impact. It expects to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by about 20 percent compared to conventional stores.

In addition, both stores are equipped with a charger for electric vehicles.
