Japanese Steel Industry to Help Cut Global CO2 Emissions from Steel Production

The Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF), a national organization of steelmakers in Japan, announced its plan to tackle global warming on November 26, 2009. In the announcement, JISF expressed its intension to further improve the energy efficiency in the steel production process, which is already the highest level in the world. JISF will also help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by supplying high-performance steel for products that are effective for reducing CO2 emissions and essential to create a low-carbon society. Furthermore, JISF aims to contribute to a reduction in global emissions from steel production by transferring and spreading Japan's energy conservation technologies and equipment to other countries. On a long-term basis, JISF intends to develop an innovative steel production process.

In Japan, various energy conservation technologies, such as Coke Dry Quenching, Top Pressure Recovery Turbines, and the Gas Turbine Combined Cycle System using by-product gases, were have been developed and put into practical use. By incorporating these technologies, countries including China, South Korea, India, Russia, Ukraine, and Brazil have achieved a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, totaling 33 million tons (CO2 equivalent) annually as of October 2009.

The transfer of Japan's energy conservation technologies has a great potential for reducing CO2 emissions from the global steel industry. According to JISF's estimates, annual CO2 emissions could be reduced by 340 million tons in the world, and by 130 million tons in seven countries belonging to the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (Australia, China, India, South Korea, the United States, Canada and Japan).
