Fujitsu Establishes Action Guidelines on Biodiversity

Fujitsu Ltd., a major electronics manufacturer in Japan, announced the establishment of in-house guidelines, called the "Fujitsu Group Biodiversity Action Principles," on October 22, 2009. They highlight the application of information technology (IT) solutions towards conserving biodiversity, raising awareness of it throughout society, and actively undertaking initiatives on a global scale. The intention is not only to strive for the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources in its own business activities, but also to contribute to initiatives undertaken by its customers and society in general.

The company signed the Business and Biodiversity Initiative Leadership Declaration at the Ninth Conference of the Parties (COP9) to the Conservation on Biological Diversity (CBD), held in Bonn, Germany, in 2008. Afterwards, in its medium-term environmental vision, "Green Policy 2020," it declared its commitment to conserve biodiversity by implementing tropical rainforest regeneration projects in Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

Fujitsu has since been carrying out various types of actions. For example, it has conducted environmental analyses of things such as topography, soil conditions, and vegetation for municipalities, and utilized its IT solutions towards more sustainable agriculture, forestry, and fishing. Furthermore, it has created and distributed an illustrated audio-assisted book on birds.

It has also added approaches for the conservation of biodiversity to items included in its supplier evaluation system, delivered on-demand environmental lectures about biodiversity, and established a website for children. Fujitsu is also promoting its remote-sensing, database technologies, and analysis and evaluation techniques, in order to apply IT to the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources. The company intends to expand the spirit of biodiversity conservation to general society and continue building its IT infrastructure to support these activities.
