CSR Initiatives Among Japanese Corporations Coming Along, Research Indicates

Nippon Keidanren (Japanese Business Federation), an economic organization comprising large corporations and industry associations, announced the results of its CSR (corporate social responsibility) survey on September 15, 2009. The survey was conducted among its 1,297 corporate members between May and July 2009 with the aim of uncovering how corporations embrace CSR in managing their businesses, what challenges that they face, and how CSR initiatives have evolved at each company since fall 2008. The response rate was 33.7 percent.

As a long-term change since 2005, more than 70 percent of respondents reported progress in developing CSR framework, training employees, as well as making information accessible in order to facilitate their CSR initiatives. When asked about the changes observed since fall 2008, however, the majority indicated that their principles and approaches towards CSR haven't changed, despite the current economic climate; although some companies are reviewing their business priorities.

The survey also revealed that 49 percent of the companies conduct internal audit while 24 percent hold third-party reviews in an effort to improve the credibility of their information. In addition, it indicated that companies share challenges related to employee training and internal communications at their group companies in different fields and countries.
