2009 Sustainability World Index Includes 32 Japanese Companies

The results of the annual selection for the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, or DJSI World, were announced on September 4, 2009. The DJSI World is a global sustainability index that serves as a benchmark for socially responsible investment (SRI).

In the assessment for the 2009 DJSI World, 317 companies, including 32 Japanese firms, were selected from about 2,500 eligible corporations around the world. The Japanese companies selected include Panasonic Corp., Sompo Japan Insurance Inc., Seiko Epson Corp., NEC Corp., Kao Corp., Daiwa Securities Group Inc., Sumitomo Forestry Co. and others.

The DJSI World was developed in 1999 by Dow Jones & Company, an American publishing and financial information firm, and SAM Group Holding AG, a Switzerland-based investment group specialized in sustainable investing. Assessing the sustainability of global leading companies based on economic, environmental and social criteria, the DJSI World selects corporations that are most likely to grow sustainably for years to come.
