Total Green Roof and Green Wall Area Created in 2008 Equivalent to 58 Soccer Fields

Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) released the results of the 2008 national survey of green roof and green wall installations on July 17, 2009. MLIT surveyed 410 landscape companies, general contractors and suppliers of green roof and green wall products throughout Japan, obtaining 222 responses.

The survey indicated that vegetation was planted on approximately 33.6 hectares of rooftop space and 7.5 hectares of wall surface, equivalent to 47 and 11 soccer fields, respectively, during 2008.

Although the total green roof area created in 2008 was about 10 percent less than in the previous year, there was a 50 percent increase in the total green wall surface installed. Cumulatively, about 242 hectares of green roof area and 24 hectares of green wall surface have been installed in the nine years from 2000 to 2008. The breakdown by building type shows that single and multi-family homes account for one-third of the green roof area, whereas commercial buildings account for about 40 percent of the green wall surface.

Green roof is gaining attention as it alleviates the urban heat-island effect while creating a beautiful, soothing urban atmosphere.
