Five major Japanese blue-chip companies established a corporate leaders' network, called Japan Climate Leaders' Partnership (Japan-CLP), on July 30, 2009, making it the first such organization in Japan aiming to realize a sustainable low-carbon society from a business point of view. On the same day, they also released a shared vision, "Towards a sustainable low-carbon society: Our common vision," incorporating a sense of urgency and commitments on climate change from a business standpoint. Japan-CLP is calling for other companies to support their vision.

Its founding partnership companies include: the major retailer Aeon Co., Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., the global electronics manufacturer Fujitsu Ltd., The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd., and the global office equipment supplier Ricoh Co. These companies consider climate change to be one of the top priorities in business management. Thus, assuming that the transition to a low-carbon society is necessary for maintaining business activities, they will take the lead in achieving a sustainable future, as well as proactively communicating messages to accelerate changes in society.

Japan-CLP will compile a proposal for achieving a sustainable low-carbon society, and widely disseminate it to policymakers, industries and citizens, both at home and abroad. To that end, Japan-CLP also plans to provide opportunities for discussion to realize such societies in Asia by holding symposiums in Japan, as well as international forums, as part of activities focusing on Asian countries.
