Mitsubishi Motors Begins Sales of Electric Vehicles to Institutional Customers

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. started to sell the production version of the i-MiEV electric vehicle on July 23, 2009. The Prefecture of Kanagawa, Japan Post, and Tokyo Electric Power Company -- three entities who are adopting i-MiEVs in their operations -- held a joint launching ceremony at the Kanagawa prefectural office on the same day.

The i-MiEV is a four-seat, K-car class (light automobile class) electric vehicle, which can be charged in one of the three ways: rapid 200 V 3-phase charge; normal 200 V AC charge; and normal 100 V AC charge. Because the vehicle runs solely on electricity, no additional carbon dioxide is generated.

Mitsubishi expects to sell about 1,400 i-MiEVs to electric power utilities, local governments and large institutional customers during fiscal 2009. The company also started to take pre-orders from individual customers at its dealerships nationwide on July 31, 2009, in advance of the car's release for sales to the general public scheduled in April 2010. A total of 5,000 i-MiEVs are expected to be sold in the Japanese market during fiscal 2010.
