Toyota to Introduce PHV into Model Prefectures Selected for METI Project

Toyota Motor Corp., a major Japanese car manufacturer, announced on June 3, 2009 that in corporation with local governments, it will start introducing its plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) into model prefectures called "EV & pHV Towns" selected by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Toyota will lease about 200 PHVs to specific users such as public offices, autonomous bodies and companies from the end of 2009.

Toyota is developing the new PHV using the third-generation Prius body, equipped with lithium ion batteries that can be fully recharged using standard electrical power supplies. The PHV can be driven as an electric vehicle for shorter distances, while for long distance journeys, it operates as a full hybrid with its petrol engine; therefore, it can be driven where no battery charging infrastructure is available. The PHV is also expected to further reduce carbon dioxide emissions as compared to a conventional hybrid vehicle.

Toyota believes that the PHV is the most diffusible eco car, and is planning to launch it in US and European markets in the future.
