Hitachi Establishes Renewable Energy Promotion Division

Hitachi Ltd., a leading general electronics manufacturer in Japan, announced on May 28, 2009, that it had established the Renewable Energy Promotion Division as of April 1, 2009. The company is centralizing its efforts to promote and expand business in renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, aiming to generate a gross revenue in the range of 200 billion yen (about U.S.$2.1 billion) in fiscal 2015.

Hitachi has already developed a 2-megawatt wind turbine, which is the world's largest class for a downwind type, as part of its efforts to expand sales of wind power generation systems, primarily in the domestic market. The company's photovoltaic generation system business has also developed a large-capacity solar inverter that allows a photovoltaic generation system to be connected reliably to the power grid.
The company further plans to develop and provide a 'smart grid', which will comprise a next-generation power distribution system able to efficiently integrate renewable energy sources.
