Nippon Oil Corporation announced on March 3, 2009, that the company completed construction of its Soene House (Energy Creation House), a show house located in Kohoku Ward in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, to conduct a real-life experiment in attaining a carbon-free residential home. The Soene House is being used as a demonstration site for the Integrated Residential Energy System that encompasses various energy saving and generating units.

The Soene House is a two-story, 160-square-meter home equipped with advanced technology to reduce air-conditioning load through utilizing solar energy and an air circulation system, in addition to having super-insulation. A residential fuel cell cogeneration system called ENE-FARM, photovoltaic generation (5.78 kilowatts), a storage battery system (9.36 kilowatts), and other cutting-edge energy equipment are also installed at the house, all controlled and monitored through a home energy management system (HEMS).

During the experiment, company personnel will actually live in the house to collect and analyze the data on energy consumption under various patterns of combinations of energy equipments.. Considering various family structures and lifestyles, these systems will also be verified for their environmental impact, comfort, and economy. Based on the data compiled, the company intends to identify the most effective and efficient combination and operation of equipment per each lifestyle. The company intends to commercialize the Combined Residential Energy System, including suggestion of users' effective energy conservation actions, by fiscal 2010.
