New Life Corp., an interior design company in Hida,Gifu Prefecture has developed an insulated "Air-Sandwich Curtain" made of triple-layer fabric and started sales in October 2008.

The Air-Sandwich Curtain is constructed by inserting a proprietary fabric between an outer decorative fabric and a window-facing reflective fabric. It creates a three-layer structure that "sandwiches" air in between to improve thermal performance. The difference in temperature between the room side and the window side of the curtain is about 5 to 10 degrees Celsius depending on the indoor conditions. As a result, the curtain improves efficiency of heating in winter and cooling in summer.

A 2m x 2m Air-Sandwich Curtain is priced at around 26,000 yen (about U.S.$289), and approximately 600 curtains have been sold as of March 2009. Customers who have bought the product have remarked that it takes only one-half as long to heat the room as it previously did and that they are no longer cold to be near the window.
