METI Releases Collection of Best Practices for Eco-Businesses in Japan

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) released on November 18, 2008, a collection of best practices for operating a successful eco-business and a compilation of successful case studies. The ministry aims to foster eco-business in Japan by codifying and diffusing know-how from successful companies.

METI chose cases in each area of businesses related to global warming, recycling, coexistence of business and nature, and pollution reduction, and then conducted an interview survey of their keys to success and problem solving in starting, developing, and expanding their businesses. Its main targets were not large companies that operate an eco-business as part of their business but successful small and medium companies immersed in eco-business.

Among the fourteen cases related to global warming, included is a company that manufactures and sells the world's lightest multi-purpose windmill. Of the eight related to recycling, included is a company that has developed and sells a commercial-use food waste disposal unit that works using microwaves. One of the three cases related to harmony between business and nature, plus pollution reduction, is a company that provides a one-stop solution for treating polluted soil. In addition, 21 other innovative cases were included for reference. The ministry plans to update the collection of cases as needed, based on advice from experts.
