Yokohama, Nissan Motor to Target Zero Emissions

Nissan Motor Co., of Japan and the City of Yokohama signed a memorandum on November 5, 2008, to collaborate in studying next-generation transportation systems in the city. Designated as one of 13 environmental model cities in Japan (as of January 2009) in July 2008, Yokohama has worked on a city plan to appeal and realize "drastic reductions in carbon dioxide emissions and a city lifestyle to stop global warming."

Both parties will consider the following:
1. Disseminating how to drive in an eco-friendly manner by adopting Nissan's Eco-drive Management System (EMS); 2. Demonstration of Nissan's detailed navigation system based on probe traffic information, and a simulation-based impact assessment of traffic mitigation and reductions in carbon dioxide emissions; and 3. Provision of subsidies to purchase vehicles, reducing parking fees and expanding recharge facilities in order to induce wider dissemination of electric vehicles.

With further development together with the University of Tokyo promoting industry-university cooperation, impact assessments and information dissemination will be reflected in the Action Plan on the Environmental Model City, planned in fiscal years 2009-2013.
