Environment Ministry Selects Nine Carbon-Offset Model Projects

Japan's Ministry of the Environment announced on August 5, 2008, that it adopted nine model projects out of 37 applications received between June 16 and July 4, 2008, for its Fiscal 2008 Model Project Plan for Carbon Offsets.

The plan is aimed at promoting and spreading carbon-offset efforts, one of the critical mechanisms used to shift toward a low-carbon society. The model projects will first be improved upon with input from specialists, and then promoted as examples of effective projects.

The nine model projects selected, including those of gConscious Inc. and Hitachi Ltd., which provide carbon offsets for products and services, launched businesses after first receiving interviews and expert advice in late August 2008.

The Ministry continues to gather information about the subsequent progress of the projects, and is to compile a final report at the end of fiscal 2008.
