Japanese Company Cuts CO2 Emissions by 21.2 Percent through Eco-Driving Campaign
The logistics department of Miyama, Inc., which is engaged in comprehensive environmental business and is based in Nagano City, Japan, achieved a 21.2 percent reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2007, as compared to 2001 levels, due to an eco-driving program called the Green Driver Campaign. The company says that the annual reduction of 1,869 tons was the result of improved environmental awareness among its 163 distribution drivers, as well as its unique eco-driving navigation system.

Miyama's environmental activities date back to the start of the idling stop campaign in 1997. In 2001, the company developed an eco-driving navigation system known as MHS-01, which analyzes the traffic environment and vehicle performance while driving, and provides real-time advice to drivers on energy-efficient driving.

This system won the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy Director-General's Award of the 2003 annual Energy Conservation Prize, sponsored by the Energy Conservation Center, Japan. The company aims to achieve a 23 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2010 through its Green Driver Campaign, which started in 2005.
