Sagawa Express Co., a major Japanese delivery company, started a new eco-friendly campaign in April 2008, to complement its previous efforts, such as the introduction of a large number of natural gas vehicles and promotion of modal shift in transportation from trucking to railroad. By sending a package through the Eco-Friendly Delivery Service on Sagawa's website, customers can automatically contribute carbon credits to the Japanese government without extra charge. These credits are equivalent to the amount of CO2 emissions per package (346 grams on average) from its transportation.

Sagawa responded to people who wanted to individually contribute to the "target of reducing CO2 emissions by 6 percent" of the Kyoto Protocol but do not know how to do it. The company provides a "green card" to the customer and stamps each package collected to show the degree of its contributions. Customers can learn about the campaign progress and their contributions on the website.

Sagawa purchased ten thousands tons of CO2 emissions credit from the UN-approved wind-power project in Tamil Nadu, India, a project against greenhouse gas emissions, and is using them in this campaign.
