Seven-Eleven Japan Co., a major convenience store chain in Japan, launched a new environment-friendly store on February 29, 2008; the store is designed to incorporate technologies that reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Located in Yoshida, Nagano, Nagano Pref., the new store is one of the company's environmental initiatives outlined in a comprehensive collaborative agreement concluded with Nagano Prefecture in November 2007.

The store adopted high-output fluorescent lights to reduce the number of lights from the usual 85 to 63. It also introduced highly reflective ceramic tile flooring to enhance illumination. These attempts are expected to reduce annual CO2 emissions by 15.7 percent. Installing lighting fixtures with occupancy sensors in the office and storage room is also expected to reduce CO2 emissions from these fixtures by 46.3 percent, as the sensor automatically dims the lights when the room is unoccupied.

With this new equipment together with other "green" efforts already in place, "Nagano-yoshida Ni-chome Store" now serves as Seven-Eleven's first experimental store for evaluating environment-friendly enhancements. The company plans to incorporate similar energy-saving systems at other branches across the nation.
