The Green IT Promotion Council of Japan was established on February 1, 2008, following a proposal made by seven representatives of IT-related industry organizations such as the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) and Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association (JEMA). With 163 member companies and organizations (as of April 25, 2008) and a list of observers -- including representatives from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as well as academic experts -- the aim of the new organization is to support partnerships between industry, government, and academia.

The Council aims to promote practical measures to counter global warming through the application of IT and electronic technologies, plus economic and social reformation via the use of energy saving IT equipment.

To this end, the Council is to pursue educational activities related to reducing environmental burdens, form an international network through links with foreign organizations, propose themes for research and development, and implement studies and analyses of the energy saving potential of IT and electronic technologies.

As the Council's initial main projects, it held the Green IT International Symposium on May 29, 2008, and is planning displays at the Toyako Summit in July 2008.
