The Japanese Ministry of the Environment released on December 21, 2007, a self-assessment manual to enhance the reliability of environmental reports. The manual explains measures that can be used by corporations to self-evaluate their environmental reports. In Japan, the Environment Consideration Law, which came into force on April 1, 2005, requires corporations to improve on the accuracy and credibility of their environmental reports.

The manual illustrates the suggested procedure for assessing information listed in an environmental report from the various perspectives of accuracy, neutrality, verifiability, and whether the most significant information is properly covered. Additionally, a checklist provided in the manual demonstrates the steps of the procedure in an easy-to-follow manner.
