NTT Data Corp. began offering management services to data centers in January 2008 to protect the environment through energy saving measures, as it was announced on December 26, 2007. The new service, called the Green Data Center, evaluates IT installations in the company's data centers and those of its customers; provides consulting services; and designs, builds, operates, and manages data centers using energy efficient technologies, such as improved virtualization, power supply systems, and air-cooling efficiency -- all based on customer needs.

Along with the new service, the company aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent, by evaluating and helping to modify all component technologies in its existing data centers in and around Tokyo. The company estimates its sales at over 3 billion yen (about U.S.$27 million), with at least 30 major systems to be improved by 2010.

The amount of electricity consumed at data centers has been rapidly increasing worldwide, having nearly tripled since 2000. In addition to the power used to run the servers themselves, the amount of electricity used for cooling systems, as well as all the buildings and facilities involved, is considered to contribute to the energy crisis and the trend of global warming. NTT Data intends to tackle these issues as a data center with the nation's largest floor space.

As part of these efforts, in December 2007, it joined the Green Grid Association, which promotes energy efficiency at data centers in the United States. It also plans to support activities aimed at promoting the association's mission in Japan, in collaboration with other member companies, and to draw up industry standard specifications, guideline, and metrics in the IT world.
