Quick Slide Rule Calculation of CO2 Emissions Available on PCs and Cell Phones
Iwate Prefecture introduced a new carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions calculator, called "Electric Digital Slide Rule, at the opening ceremony of the "Iwate Carbon Diet Project 2007" on November 1, 2007. The slide rule is an advanced version of the "Environmental Load Slide Rule," which was created by the staff of the local government in 2006. The "electric digital slide rule" works on a personal computer or a cell phone to quickly calculate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

In addition, it simulates how much carbon is emitted from daily activities such as taking a bath or recycling cans. It displays the amount of CO2 emissions in an easy-to-understand way, for instance, indicating the equivalent number of soccer balls. Together with quizzes and hints, it is devised to help citizens to learn about global warming issues.

The electric digital slide rule is available at the prefecture's website. The Environmental Load Slide Rule can be also downloaded for free.
